Deerhunter

Posted in Gigs by Catriona on April 30, 2009

Bradford Cox declared that his ambition was to “make a discography that listens like a schizo mixtape” and Deerhunter’s sound is certainly subverting typical genres, hovering somewhere in the surreal territory of ambient punk. Cox is notorious for his onstage behaviour, which, combined with the fact that he suffers from Marfan syndrome and has a penchant for wearing dresses, is pretty startling. This is a rescheduled gig – they were originally due to play in March – but the delay has just heightened the sense of anticipation, especially for those lucky enough to catch their last performance in Whelans, back in 2007, which was certainly memorable. Deerhunter are one of the most effortlessly cool bands around, and are even able to cite Karen O as one of their fans, with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer describing their live shows as “a religious experience”. One thing’s for sure, this gig certainly won’t be predictable.

Andrews Lane Theatre,  22nd May, 7.30pm. (€14)

Metric – Fantasies

Posted in Albums by Catriona on April 29, 2009

Metric, I love you. I’ve been playing Fantasies constantly for about two weeks now, and I still can’t get enough of it. Not only is the album packed full of some of the best alt-pop songs that I’ve heard so far this year, but everything about this band is so effortlessly cool, it almost hurts. There, I’ve said it, I’ve lost all my dignity now, so I might as well keep on going on my Metric love-rant. Although the album really works best listened to in its entirely, my personal favourites were the first track and single “Help, I’m Alive” which showcases Haines’s haunting vocals to their best effect, and “Gimme Sympathy” which has a great chorus, and is, as you might have guessed from the title, considerably influenced by the Rolling Stones. “Satellite Mind” is another one to download – it’s not one of the singles, but it’s genuinely brilliant. Fantasies is a great album, listen to it, if you havn’t already, it’s 100% fantastic.

Iggy Pop – The Passenger

Posted in Videos by Catriona on April 10, 2009

I came across this footage of Iggy Pop from 1977 ages ago, but never got around to putting it on the blog until now. I love how atmospheric this version of “The Passenger” is, despite the fact that he’s so out of it that he has to be carried onto the stage.
